One of the projects volunteers at Voluntario Global take part in is ‘Comedor Los Pibes’. A community centre which serves as a soup kitchen, feeding over 100 people in need every day and providing not just a warm meal but also serves as a social meeting point for those who needed it. However, last week the community centre hosted a completely different activity with the launch party of the community radio station FM Riachuelo taking place there on Friday. I went along to with a few other volunteers to party who were there to celebrate the launch of the radio station.
Located in the barrio of La Boca, FM Riachelo is a radio station which aims to provide a voice to everyone; their motto being “Donde caben todas las voces” (Where there is room for all voices). The radio station is said to be open to the entire community, providing a platform to express the ambitions and hopes of people who are struggling against injustice. The launch saw the station go live for the first time. Guest enjoyed speeches by some of the people who made the creation of the radio station possible, as well performances from a political Bolovoan band. It was a great experience to witness the opening of something which so many people feel so passionate about.
