When I first decided to come to Argentina, I knew I wanted to work with people experiencing homelessness. I have always been deeply affected by seeing human beings living in conditions that can feel so inhumane, but I did not want to simply sit with that feeling. I wanted to understand it.
On June 30, 2026, I was privileged enough to attend the radio workshop for the Participatory Action Research with Homeless People lead by Sociabilidades por los márgenes, and to say the least, it was a special experience. As someone who has grown up their life obsessed with sports and has spent countless hours with all different kinds of teams and people, the perspective I take to new things is oftentimes viewed through a lens similar to that of a sports team. Every time, the best teams and the best outcomes are produced, in my experience, when you and the team are doing a couple vital things: Loving the people you are with, and genuinely wanting the people around you to succeed. Safe to say, the members not only of Voluntario Global but also, of course, the homeless people and other volunteers outside of Voluntario Global embodied this in a way I have rarely seen.
Silvia has the essence of everyone's favorite aunt, greeting you with the hug of a lifelong friend. She is the owner of BYS Academy, an English school she founded in 2005 to create an affordable educational opportunity for the students of her neighborhood, two blocks from Estancia Ing. Pablo Nogués, right behind the small shopping center. Her laughter is the last thing that would tell you how close she came to losing all of it through an economic crisis and without government funding.
Now the school functions as a cooperative in tandem with Voluntario Global. Graduated students return as volunteer teachers to gain work experience for formal jobs. Their work is supplemented by volunteers from Voluntario Global, and this is where Victor and I enter.

A few months after saying goodbye to Pope Francis, we want to share the legacy he leaves behind—one that goes far beyond his role as a religious leader.
His message reaches into politics, culture, and the economy through his position as Head of State of the Vatican and leader of one of the most influential institutions in the world.
As we celebrate 19 years of Voluntario Global, we want to share some of the voices that have shaped our journey. Over nearly two decades, countless volunteers, community members, and partners have built bridges across cultures and worked together for meaningful community building.
Voluntario Global helps local communities by being available to discuss anything that local organizations need, and offering ideas for further change and development.
