Soup Kitchen Soup Kitchen Celine Mestivier

Communications volunteer Tim spent a day working in the soup kitchen, and learned how tasks that seem small contribute to a larger impact.

On my way to the soup kitchen, I saw myself gradually entering a very different area. Surrounding buildings were lower and torn than those in the center. And the neighborhood was rather quiet and only a few people walking in the streets.

It took us about 10 minutes to walk from the bus stop. The soup kitchen was inside a colorful building. Inside the soup kitchen, we worked with other local volunteers to prepare food for people in need. The tasks we took were rather simple, such as peeling for the carrots. They were not difficult but still challenging in the way that you are supposed to do it quick – don’t forget the amount of food you have to prepare!

To be frank, as a communications volunteer, the work itself in a soup kitchen was not really interesting to me. But when you see people receiving the food, you see your contribution to the community, and you know you are doing right – no matter how insignificant your contribution may be.

Pensar el voluntariado como una experiencia colectiva

Siempre decimos que el voluntariado es un proceso de aprendizaje, y un proceso de aprendizaje jamás sucede de manera aislada. Por lo tanto el voluntariado también es una experiencia colectiva.

Volunteering as a collective experience

As we always say, volunteering is a learning process. And a learning process is never isolated. Volunteering is also a collective experience signed by the relation we'll create with the communities we'll work with.
