Radio Station Radio Station

The recent and inspiring launch of Radio Soldati 91.3FM by the organization El Hormiguero has been closely followed by the equally inspiring release of their evening show ‘Mujeres en Accion’ (5pm-6pm daily).

This show aims to spread ideas of women’s rights throughout the barrio, and give them a wider-reaching, more powerful voice within the district. It was devised and is run by Soli and Meche, who were both involved with El Hormiguero from the beginning. Meche explained how she used to be taught by Valeria in one of the earliest schools projects run by Voluntario Global, and how this inspired her to stay within the neighbourhood, helping other young women to make a better future for themselves and motivating them to stand up for their rights. 10 years later, and Meche has certainly achieved this dream.

Meche and Soli both work and volunteer during the day, before dedicating their evenings to the radio show. They spend lots of time researching notable female figures in the history of Argentina and the rest of the world, and present information about a new character each night to help give their listeners a greater understanding of what women can achieve. The station works the idea of female empowerment into every aspect of the show; only playing positive songs by female artists to help spread this message. They often invite a male guest to come and discuss this as well as local news on gender violence or certain crimes, which helps the show to broadcast a balanced and interesting viewpoint. At the end of the show, the guest will be given a ‘machismo’ test in which the women ask him questions and judge his reactions- this section is always provides a cheerful note as the group end up laughing together about societal perceptions of women and the woman’s role.

‘Women in Action’ is a very important step on the way to creating the acceptance of equal rights within the neighbourhood, as well as giving advice on female health issues and problems within the home. As an extension to the show, Meche and Soli (who used to be a hairdresser) hold an evening class on the ground floor where local women can come and learn hairdressing as a skill, giving them a chance to be independent and make their own money. These classes are linked to gender violence and the women have very heated discussions as they work.

The fact that ‘Women in Action’ is now a reality shows the people’s desire to finally achieve gender equality within the neighbourhood and put and end to the extreme acts of gender violence occurring in many barrios within South America. It is a truly inspiring project, with a very bright future. Just another example of superwomen acting on their own accord to bring positive changes within Buenos Aires.
