No more undervaluing mental health

Today is World Mental Health Day and we feel it is important to mention this in times of pandemic. The relevance of mental health must always be recognized, and this year has made it visible to many who previously ignored it.

This year exhaustion, burnout, stress, distress, and depression have appeared across the life of most people. Not to mention other mental health conditions that have deepened or developed in this context. These are times of challenge and adaptation, and that is not without consequences. Sometimes we move forward and face problems as we can without realizing what this generates in our mental health.

It is important that this is visible.

Working in a hospital in times of pandemic, living with the fear of infecting our loved ones, adapting to taking classes from a distance, feeling the frustration of not having the technological means to be able to do everything, readjusting businesses, suffering unemployment, grieving for projects that couldn't be done, not being able to see family and friends, increasing poverty, and so on.

It doesn't take a pandemic to see what's important in mental health, but for many it does. On this World Mental Health Day, we call for more community health practices, more mental health budgets, no more stigma and social exclusion, and no more undervaluing mental health.

Our weekly coordination update: last week of August

This was a week with a lot of news!

On Monday we had two introductory meetings:

Johannes, now nicknamed "Yoyo", came from Germany and started his volunteering in Comunidad Milpa for a couple of months and this was his first week adapting to a new country and a different language.

Also Emma, Dominic, and now PJ from the USA who are in Argentina for an exchange abroad from their university are joining us. During this semester they will be studying and having their intercultural experience from the service learning subject teaching English, in the community kitchen and in the early childhood center.

Soon we will give you more news about their learning and feelings about the different projects. We hope you all have a great experience!
